By the 16th century, after the fall of the Kingdom of Georgia, an autonomous Abkhazia Duchy emerged, governed by the Shervashidze dynasty (also known as Sharvashidze, or Chachba). Under Ottoman rule, most Abkhazia residents converted to Islam. The duchy retained limited autonomy within the Ottoman Empire, and later within the Russian empire, but was eventually annexed and Russian empire in 1864.
